Keeping Up with Trends
Keeping visitors
The Center for the Future of Museums issued a report called TrendsWatch 2012: Museums and the Pulse of the Future. In their report, they identified 7 over-arching trends, for US museums in particular. You can download a copy for free using this link: http://www.futureofmuseums.org/reading/publications/TrendsWatch.cfmWhile we generally agree with their assessment, we feel that there are a couple other trends out there that need to be watched. Trendwatching.com is another source that we subscribe to. Recently in their July/August newsletter, we think they hit the nail on the head with a trend they call “Newism”. What is it? It’s the consumer craving new experiences, new products, at such an excellerated rate that if you are not “in the know” of the “something new”, your social status is at jeopardy.
Of particular interest to us was the “experience cramming” defined as “collecting and mixing-and-matching as many, and as wide a variety, of new experiences as possible.” So what may that mean for attractions? How can you provide unique and new experiences with the limited budgets you have? How can you quench the thirst for new experiences? Certainly we’ve seen technology play a huge role in this – everything from kickstarter, crowdsourcing, twitter feeds, facebook – all touting something “new” but our industry has a way to go in embracing this trend. It’s not just about adding something new for the season or obtaining a temporary exhibition. It’s an entire strategy of engaging with your visitors constantly and giving them experiences that are unique and varied – and doing it regularly. It’s a challenge but those who embark on this journey will be rewarded for it with engaged visitors who will want to come back – whether it’s to your location or your facebook page.
