Haptic Technology
A New Type of Visitor Experience
I had never heard of “haptic technology” before so a quick Google search told me that it’s about using technology to virtually “touch” or feel something that is on a computer screen. For example, seeing a visual of a butterfly (not the real thing) land on your arm and actually experiencing that sensation. Or, watching a video of seagulls and feeling the air as they swoop down. This technology has been used by the gaming industry quite a bit to enhance the gaming experience. Think about a video game where you shoot things and you can potentially “feel” the sensation. It’s interesting to see that big companies like Apple and car manufacturers are testing the viability of this technology. But the gaming industry has explored this and has had some hit and misses. Think about the experience of wearing a body suit with sensors so you can “feel” that gunshot. The “next big thing” seems to be a technology called ARAIG that stands for “as real as it gets” where sensors are placed around the body suit which gives you a multi-sensory feedback for video games.
Thinking about it from the visitor experience point of view, can you imagine the application possibilities? Apparently you may be able to feel a 3D skull in a museum or feel that frog jumping on your hand. You could feel the climate change from different geographic areas. The list could go on. This seems to be quite a cool way to enhance a visitor’s experience in the future so we’ll be looking for applications in the visitor attractions world.

And for those that are learners through reading, here’s an article about haptic technology and how it all started.
