Mississippi Department of Archives & History
Visioning
Kate Blount, Director of Mississippi Department of Archives & History (MDAH) recognized the need for this department to recast their vision. This state agency is responsible for collecting, preserving and providing access to Mississippi's archival resources. It also manages various museum and historic sites, and oversees programs for historic preservation, records management and publications. A Different View was brought into the project to collaborate with MDAH in developing their new vision.
MDAH employs about 160 individuals and oversees a volunteer-base of about 800. Kate Blount retained ADV to build a collaborative process of engagement involving all who wished to participate from these two groups. Town hall meetings were held to gather input to a range of strategic questions. In addition, a group of community partners were also asked for their input. After reviewing this information and soliciting additional feedback, the core visioning team met to review and revise their vision and mission statement.
The new statements were introduced in the summer of 2018 with most of the employees in attendance. Committees were created to help implement and align processes with the new vision. Much to MDAH's delight, the number of staff volunteering to serve on these committees exceeded expectations. MDAH are now on this new journey. It has been a privilege to assist them.
Client Quote
I can't tell you how pleased we are with the vision/mission process that you (Sylvia) and Rosalind led us through. We gained not just a strong vision and mission statement, but a huge increase in engagement (that word again!) among staff, volunteers, and board. People were excited to participate and I know will be enthusiastic about the outcome. I believe the process was successful because of the careful thought you put into it throughout. I could tell the process was carefully tailored for us, and it worked! Many, many thanks. Katie Blount, Director
