The Museum of Leathercraft
Visioning and concept development work
The Museum of Leathercraft together with the Leather Conservation Centre are based in Northampton but reach national and international audiences with their collection and expertise. Although two separate charities, they share an enormous amount in terms of their commitment to the heritage story of leather and also the future of leathercraft skills.
Visioning and concept development
A Different View was approached by The Leathersellers’ Company as a significant funder to both organisations to undertake an ambitious project. We were commissioned in the first instance to undertake a visioning and concept development process to explore how the two charities could be brought together to create a national centre for leather – a brand home for leather. As part of our work we also considered how formal and informal learning could be developed in partnership with universities and other leather related livery companies.
During the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, A Different View worked closely, albeit remotely, with a cross organisation project team and managed an ongoing consultation process with stakeholders.
Having completed visioning and concept development work, we went on to provide a location options appraisal and feasibility study. We also took on the roll of project managers over the course of 12 months providing continuity for stakeholders.
Having worked with the likes of Nottingham Castle and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in previous visioning and master planning projects, we were well placed to take on this complex strategic project.
As is the case with most multi-stage projects, lots of interactive workshops were undertaken to ensure work was collaborative, ideas were imaginative and concepts were integrated.
It was fantastic to assist such a culturally rich and important project during a time where the wider industry was foregoing a period of uncertainty. We wish them well for their next stage of development.
