The Serious Side of Having Fun
The World's Deepest Bin
We love this video from Volkswagen. It shows how putting a sound effect of a long fall into a normal bin, made people use it far more than normal. We also loved one a few years ago which made a staircase into a piano to get people to stop using the lift so much. Fun, enjoying something, is a very powerful tool to change behaviour, to aid learning, to drive innovation, to create high-performing teams, to enjoy life! We think it has a place in most of the projects we work on, and in most workplaces, because it helps to achieve the big things by building memorable experiences for visitors and bringing the best out of staff and volunteers. The debate about whether museums should make learning fun or fun educational is an ongoing one. We think both are good! Provided the fun is in there somewhere. It’s not appropriate to absolutely every subject matter, but it’s an important factor for most age groups and visitor segments (though what they find fun isn’t always the same!)
So we’re all for planning fun into what we do and the projects we work on – so it doesn’t get accidently missed out in the pressure of getting things done. We find the best ideas come when we help our clients have a range of different people in the room, in a relaxed atmosphere, with open minds. Having fun creates just the environment they need to solve problems, innovate and develop their common purpose. It’s our not-so-secret weapon!
